Islamic Da’wah Foundation Malaysia (Yadim) president Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Sarawak United People’s Party secretary-general Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian were sworn in as senators at the Dewan Negara in Kuala Lumpur today.

Asyraf Wajdi, 38, who is also an Umno supreme council member and Affin Islamic Bank’s Shariah Advisory Committee chairperson, said he would focus on issues confronting young people, apart from matters related to halal and Islamic finance.

A PhD holder in Islamic banking and finance from University of Loughborough, the United Kingdom, he served as academic coordinator at the Institute of Islamic Banking, International Islamic University Malaysia in 2006.  

Dr Sim, 49, who is also Sarawak General Hospital’s Board of Visitors member, had held several positions in the field of health, including National Heart Association president (2008) and Medical Association of Malaysia (Sarawak) chairperson (2007).

Dr Sim graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Monash University, and said he would also focus on young people, especially from Sarawak.

The duo took their oath of office before Dewan Negara president Abu Zahar Ujang.
