PKR Women’s wing chief Zuraida Kamaruddin said Gerakan has nothing to be proud of although its candidate won the Teluk Intan by-election.

Zuraida said Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong had only managed to increase the votes for BN by 71 from the time when he had been the then-MP for Teluk Intan.

“This is nothing to be proud of,” Zuraida said in a statement.

“During his tenure back then, how much change did he bring to the people of Teluk Intan?” she asked.

Zuraida said DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud lost the seat probably due to postal votes.

She said Gerakan’s victory may have also be due to Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s warning that the government knows who is voting or not.

In Sunday’s polling, Mah ( second from right in photo ) recaptured the seat from the DAP by a wafer thin majority of 238 votes.

“The 238 postal votes and the total votes that do not tally raises question to whether Mah’s win is actually tenable,” said the Ampang MP.

She then urged Mah not to cheat the people of Teluk Intan after his victory there.

“Do your job and deliver on your promises or else the people will know what to do in the next general election,” Zuuraida said.

“Now that you will be a minister, make sure you put the people’s interest first and do not be a puppet to your Umno master,” she added.

Nevertheless, Zuraida praised the voters who have made a clever move considering all the goodies and development that had been promised during the by-election.

“Now that the by-election is over, it is time to deliver on those promises,” she said.

“Of course, if Mah had wanted to deliver development to Teluk Intan, he would have done so previously when he was the MP there,” she added.

“Now, we just have to wait to see if it will materialise or whether it becomes just another empty promise,” she stressed.

Zuraida expressed disappointment that Dyana Sofya had lost the by-election but congratulated her for putting up an “admirable fight” there.

Should she have won, it would have been another victory for women, Zuraida added.

She asked Dyana Sofya to stay strong as Mah would probably be a “transit MP” in Teluk Intan.
