A heavy afternoon dowpour at 2pm yesterday caused massive flash floods at the Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) Gombak campus near Kuala Lumpur.

A spokesperson for UIA said vehicles belonging to staff and students of UIA were submerged in the flood waters reaching up to waist level.

“The flood is believed to have been caused by a river running through UIA which began to overflow into the streets,” he told Bernama .

He, however, said the situation came under control when the water subsided about an hour later.

No casualties were reported and the incident did not affect the daily operations of the university, including the students who were sitting for their semester exams, he said.

Meanwhile, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Mohamad Sani Harul said several surrounding areas like Kampung Laksamana, Batu Caves, Taman Melati and Batu 6, Gombak were also affected by the flash floods.

“In Jalan Kampung Tengah, Batu 6 Gombak, water in Sungai Gombak began to rise and the water was at ankle level when firefighters received a call at 3.10pm but it soon subsided,” he said.
