The Ampang Sessions Court today saw a 19-year-old college student being given eight strokes of the rotan after pleading guilty to two counts of raping a teenage girl last year.
Judge Manira Mohd Nor handed down the sentence on Ainur Asyriq Aizamuddin, The Star online reported today.
He was whipped in front of a doctor, his parents and a group of observers. A thin rotan (the type used for punishing white collar criminals) was used.
"Despite wearing jeans, Ainur Asyriq was seen flinching each time the policeman readied to whip him," The Star' s reporter Qishin Tariq wrote.
"He was heard groaning in pain and appeared to be holding back tears after the fifth stroke."
The sentence came under Section 293(1)(c) of the Criminal Procedure Code, as an alternative to sending the young offender to prison.
Under the code, such offenders can be whipped up to 10 times. He was also ordered to undertake three months of community service.
Ainur Asyriq pleaded guilty to committing the offence twice at an apartment in Estana Court, in Ukay Bestari, Ampang Jaya on Nov 19 and Dec 7 last year.
He had originally claimed trial but on May 14, changed his plea and admitted to the crime. He was represented by lawyer Farhan Read.
