Youths have been advised to act rationally while on the Internet, especially on social media, and not be swayed by emotions.

Prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor (right) said that youths should be taught how to surf the internet wisely so as to not lead to social depravity or harm themselves, their families or the country.

"Currently, various cases involving the cyber world among the social media users have been reported.

"Thus, I hope the children will think rationally first instead of being influenced by emotion when surfing the internet so that our action will not bring negative impact to ourselves and the country," she is quoted by Bernama as saying in Putrajaya today.

Rosmah, who is also president of the Girl Guides' Association Malaysia said the association has also selected 40 Putrajaya branch Girl Guides leaders to be 'Cybersafe Little Ambassadors' to encourage responsible use of the Internet.

Umno behind on social media

Meanwhile, the national newswire also quoted Umno information chief Ahmad Maslan (left) as saying that the party should do use social media more to reach out to the young.

“We should use YouTube to convey information as what is done by the opposition. This is because young people don't have the time to attend talks.

"We will also paste posters not on the walls of buildings but on Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp to tell the truth," he told reporters after a Muslim Scholars function organised by Kelantan Umno in Kota Baru.

At the event, Ahmad, who is deputy finance minister, also urged Muslim scholars to explain the Goods and Services Tax to the people.
