Student activists have urged for the abolition of two Acts related to university administration, following the recent suspension of 25 students from three local universities on various charges.

The Student Movement To Abolish UUCA handed over a memorandum to the BN and Pakatan Rayat MPs on the matter in Parliament today.

The group wants the University and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA) as well as the Educational Institutions (Discipline) Act 1976 to be abolished as it represses student rights.

Group chairperson Khairol Najib Hashim said that the charges were carried out under both the Acts at Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

Among the charges were participating in an illegal demonstration and tarnishing the universities' names in Facebook.

This included protesting the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) during the townhall meeting with United States president Barack Obama at UM in April.

According to Khairul, although there were amendments made to the UUCA in 2012 but it is still not enough to release the students from the university's iron grip.

"Even though the most oppressive clauses in the UUCA like the rights of students to be active in politics has been abolished, but the Act still allows the university management to enact draconian regulations to control students," he said in the memorandum.

When contacted earlier, Khairol said that the memorandum was submitted to Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and Education Minister Idris Jusoh.

The memorandum was also passed to Shahrir Samad (BN-Johor Baharu), Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai), and Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PAS-Bachok) at the Parliament lobby earlier today.
