Umno, PAS bring hudud showdown to Selangor
YOURSAY ‘Umno is helping PAS to dig the grave it appears to crave.’
S'gor Umno's hudud move throws PAS into quandary
Kim Quek: Actually, there is no harm for the Selangor state government to set up a body to look into the feasibility of introducing hudud. Such a study should proceed in two stages.
The first stage is to study the legal feasibility: whether the federal constitution need be amended, and if so, the extent, and whether this would mean a contradiction of the core structure and spirit of the constitution which is the foundation upon which this nation is built.
It is only after this fundamental issue is satisfactorily settled that the state government needs to go into the second stage, which is a study on its feasibility from the religious, political, social and economic point of view.
Such studies, if performed by respected individuals of high integrity and competence, should go a long way towards bringing this controversial issue to an end, thus removing it from plaguing the nation through irresponsible political exploitation that has caused endless conflicts and turmoil to our country.
Anonymous #06188481: I think Kim Quek is going on a dangerous path. I am sorry to say there are no respectable people who are able to discuss this issue objectively.
The fact that this country does not have a leader, a true leader, speaks volumes about the state of every affairs in the country. Things would not have to come to this stage if we indeed had a true leader.
Supercession: Umno is merely helping PAS to dig the grave it appears to crave. If PAS were smart, it would decisively reject the motion and move on, never to resurrect the issue again. To do otherwise would be to play into Umno's hands.
Multi Racial: Umno is still playing 80s politics. In the past, they could contradict themselves and get away with it because there were no alternative media.
Today we know that Umno rejects hudud in certain states, especially Kelantan and Terengganu, but not in Selangor where they are proposing it. Are they thinking Malaysians are idiots?
Relevancy: It’s all a game of politics, and not about religion. PAS wants to implement hudud and decides it want to do so not only in Kelantan but also Terengganu, (which later went back to being a BN state).
But BN strikes back and decided on Selangor, a Pakatan Rakyat state. The question is whether Pakatan will accept BN’s motion on PAS’ implementation of hudud, whereby BN will follow with more salvos being fire at Pakatan from then onwards.
It looks like Pakatan is the loser either way as they fired the first salvo, while BN is responding with multiple salvos. Pakatan is reaping what they sowed for its ‘agree to disagree’ attitude.
Caesar: Why don't BN leaders table the same motion in states controlled by them, like Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Johor or Malacca and then they can "think" about it in Selangor, which is not ruled by them.
Basically: PAS has continuously been played out by Umno for decades over the hudud issue, and it still hasn’t learned its lesson. It's Umno's last defence against PAS.
Yet PAS has left itself open to be attacked by Umno again and again. It’s time they sit down and rethink their strategy if they ever think they have a chance to govern the country, Islamic way or not.
Or they can go on pressing for hudud, knowing they are allowing Umno to rule for another 50 years with a government that is far from the ideals of Islam. It's your choice, PAS.
Hang Tuah PJ: Thank God PAS can see the political ploy. But food for thought, what is the ploy?
Does Umno think that if hudud is implemented in Selangor, the non-Malays will vote against the Pakatan government in the next general election (GE) and Umno can regain Selangor?
PAS should give a thought to this opinion of Umno. Is there any strength to their opinion? Hudud is not palatable to Selangorians and if you guys push it, you might lose Selangor next GE.
Sakit Hati Ku: There is no point beating around the bush. If Umno is not prepared to table the hudud motion in BN states, do not bother, just throw Selangor Umno's hudud motion out. Let them have a taste of their own medicine.
ONG: Allow the motion. Let PAS and Umno assemblypersons debate the issue since they are the ones who want hudud. DAP and PKR can just sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
From the debate, Malaysians will get a chance to witness how intellectual PAS and Umno leaders really are, although I suspect the debate will actually end up exposing how lacking in intellect most of them actually are.
Sleepy: From PAS' comments, the view is that Islam is being used for political advantage.
If Islam is being used for political purposes to divide different faiths/races rather than as a religion to unify different faiths/races, then is it just a mere political tool for people in power.
So can we blame people when they have a not-so-good opinion of Islam as a religion?
CiViC: Of course it's a ploy. Even the blind can see that. If Selangor is seen to support hudud, they will be accused of betraying non-Muslims, just like as in the recent Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) cases.
If they do not, Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) and others will jump and say Selangor Pakatan is anti-Islam. There's no winning card in it. Of course, the same doesn't happen in BN states.
