A high-speed ferry hit a breakwater off Macau early today, injuring 57 people, at least one seriously, a news report said.

The TurboJet ferry was carrying 220 passengers and 13 crew from Hong Kong to Macau when it hit the breakwater at 9.30am local time, the South China Morning Post reported online.

The boat was left beached on the breakwater, listing to the right, according to a photograph on the website.

It was travelling at 64kph in fine weather conditions at the time of the accident, according to the operator.

One crew member suffered “serious injuries” to the waist, a TurboJet spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Most of those hurt received minor injuries. “So far, none of them is in a life-threatening situation,” a spokesperson for Macau’s marine and water bureau was quoted as saying.
