Universiti Malaysia Terengganu vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ibrahim Komoo said the phenomenon, which occurs once in every three or four years, was a normal global phenomenon.
He said the phenomenon would begin in the Southern Pacific Ocean from Australia up to the coast of Chile.
“Since the ocean is a very wide area, any changes can influence the atmosphere, and any changes in the atmosphere will affect the Earth in the form of excessive rainfall or severe drought,” he told reporters after opening the National Geosciences Conference 2014 in Kuala Terengganu today.
Also present was the Malaysian Minerals and Geosciences Department director-general Yunus Abdul Razak.
