Umno's hudud chess game ends in a fool's mate
YOURSAY ‘Umno-BN was about to politically ‘bunuh’ themselves.’
S'gor Umno makes U-turn, withdraws hudud motion
Anonymous_40a7: So, on one fine day, Umno and Pakatan Rakyat decide to play a game of hudud chess (white - Umno; black - Pakatan).
White (move 1): Hudud motion submitted to Selangor state assembly. "If rejected, PAS will surely be at odds with DAP. We will definitely win..."
Black (move 1): Selangor Assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh: "Okay, accepted."
White (move 2): "Uh... what should we do now? Maybe we should continue on..."
Black (move 2): "Sure, carry on. I'm a speaker for all parties, remember?"
(MCA shouting from the back): "Don't play any more, Umno... you have already been checkmated!"
White (move 3): (realises what happened) "Okay... We have lost. We’ll retract the motion".
And that's how the hudud chess game ended. In a fool's mate (i.e. a two-step checkmate).
Ferdtan: Selangor Umno wanted to table a motion on the study on the feasibility of implementing hudud in the state thinking that they could cornered their political foe, Pakatan, into the corner.
They thought wrongly that the speaker would not be too happy or willing to allow the motion to be discussed as PAS and DAP, the partners in the government, would be at odd with their known different stands on the controversial issue.
Umno was only playing the mind game. They were not serious in the first place. If the speaker were to reject the motion, which they thought she would for expediency reason of maintaining harmony within Pakatan parties, they would use that fact (rejection of Umno’s motion) to belittle PAS that they were under the thumb of the Chinese DAP.
Now that Umno have retracted its motion when speaker Hannah Yeoh has agreed to their motion, Umno lost in the plot they created.
A lesson from this episode; that Umno was never in support of hudud laws in spite of some odd number of Umno leaders had spoken up in support of it. It is time for Umno as the government in power to officially state its stand clearly, ‘Are you for or against hudud laws?’
Then we shall demand the rest of the political parties to state theirs. So no more hypocrisy.
Myop101: Why did state opposition leader Mohd Shamsudin Lias withdraw the motion? I was expecting that Umno would provide very strong independent third party-based research and evidence to support the implementation of hudud.
Prudent: He should not be allowed to withdraw the motion. Umno-BN has cornered themselves and about to politically ‘bunuh’ themselves.
Let’s have a wholesome debate right in the open at the state assembly. That's the way to clear the air on hudud and let everybody be clear on what to expect. And have a feasibility study as well.
Hafidz Baharom: In the state of Selangor, with hudud acceptance being low, I can honestly say that what state assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh did by approving the motion has helped the Pakatan government win back some public support.
Foodforthought: “Shamsudin, who is also Sungai Burong state assemblyperson, blamed the Chinese press for the confusion.”
Even when Umno-BN is wrong, it still wants to play ‘theracial’ nonsense - cheapskate racist opportunist of the lowest degree.
CHKS: No need to blame the Chinese newspapers. The very fact that this motion has reached the hands of the speaker means that you have submitted it for debate in the state assembly.
You mean the speaker is also confused, is it? Just admit it, you are a coward.
The truth is - these idiots just wanted to stir a political conflict within Pakatan. They didn't expect the speaker to accept the motion for debate. Shamsudin thought the speaker, being a Chinese, would reject the motion.
Hypothetically if the speaker refuses, Umno would then stir a racial controversy and harp on the lack of freedom and transparency in Pakatan states, etc.
Given that the speaker accepted the motion, it backfired on Shamsudin. Bravo to Hannah, shame on Umno!
The truth is out - Umno is using Islam just for political gain. There is no sincerity in Umno to promote the religion. As a non-Muslim, I, too, am ashamed of what Umno has done.
Anonymous #05023297: Wow, I didn't know that Chinese-owned newspapers (i.e read that as BN government-controlled newspapers) through queries can cause Selangor Umno to retract their very important hudud debate/study.
By the way, isn't that what newspaper are supposed to do? Does that mean that if no ‘Cina’-owned papers ask him then he would proceed? Pathetic excuse for a very pathetic man.
Odysseus: Now, the world knows Umno has never been serious about hudud. They have been given a chance to speak about it in a state assembly and they declined.
Please don't go create more problems about hudud in this country. You have been checkmated. Game over.
Doc: Wow, Umno pressured by MCA to withdraw the hudud motion. Does that mean that Umno is being controlled by the Chinese, too, similar to how Umno claims that PAS is being controlled by the DAP Chinese.
Cmfoo: For Shamsudin to blame the Chinese newspapers and trying to squirm his way out to save face by calling it a 'misunderstanding' is just typical of Umno-BN.
Way to go, Hannah. Your sensible and rational move has uncovered the ulterior motive of Umno and laid bare the conniving intentions of Mohd Shamsudin who was trying to hurt Pakatan by manipulating this hudud issue.
PAS should take leaf out of this episode and discard its selfish and narrow pursuit of hudud, and instead, look at the bigger picture in the interests of all Malaysians.
Fair Play: I doubt Umno would ever use hudud to cow the non-Muslim communities in the future. Those who play with fire must be prepared to get burnt.
Spartacus: Hannah, 1, Selangor Umno, 0.
