PAS central committee member Abu Bakar Chik was killed after his car was involved in a road accident at Km390 of the East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2) near Ajil, early today.
Abu Bakar, 64, a former Batu Rakit state assemblyperson (1999-2004), died on arrival at Hulu Terengganu Hospital.
His personal aide Hasmizi Hassan,18, who was hurt in the road accident at 3.50am, was given treatment at the same hospital.
Hulu Terengganu police chief DSP Hussin Deraman said the accident occurred while Abu Bakar and Hasmizi were travelling from Bukit Besi heading towards Kuala Terengganu.
He said the Toyota Camry driven by Hasmizi was believed to have crashed into the rear of a van with five passengers inside.
“We don’t rule out the possibility that the car went out of control. Both the victims were plucked to safety before the car burst into flames,” he told Bernama in Hulu Terengganu today.
Abu Bakar, who served as a state executive council (exco) member, was born in Kampung Masjid Tepoh, Kuala Terengganu on August 18, 1950.
The PAS leader leaves a wife, Zaitun Salleh, and eight children.
Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman was among the state leaders who paid their last respects to Abu Bakar besides several PAS leaders.
His remains will be buried at the Muslim cemetery at Maahad Tahfiz Wal Tarbiyyah Darul Iman in Tok Jiring today.
