Air quality in Peninsular Malaysia has improved with most areas recording 'moderate' Air Pollutant Index (API) readings this afternoon.

This comes after several areas in the Klang Valley and Putraya had recorded ‘unhealthy’ API, exceeding 100, this morning.

According to the Department of Environment’s website, as at 9am, Putrajaya has recorded the highest reading at 112.

It is followed by Banting in Selangor with an API reading of 108, Port Klang (107), Cheras and Shah Alam (106 respectively) and Batu Muda and Petaling Jaya (103 respectively).

Nilai in Negri Sembilan too recorded ‘unhealthy’ air levels, with API of 104.

Meanwhile, Kuala Selangor is on the brink of joining the above group as API reading there has increased from 97 at 6am to 100 at 9am.

An API index of between 0 to 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'moderate', 101 to 200 'unhealthy', 201 to 300 'very unhealthy' and above 300 'hazardous'.

However, as at 4pm, the areas which recorded unhealthy levels have now recorded moderate air quality.

The air in those areas had become moderate beginning 1pm.
