Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad said that this was the rule before it was amended in 2012.

If Mais leaders were jointly chosen, then royalty can avoid criticism and blame when Muslims disagree over religious issues, he asserted.

"We are waiting for a response to this suggestion from the state government. We hope both the palace and state government can consider this. We don't want to see a clash between the two institutions. They should align.

"I believe no Muslim wants to undermine Islam even if there are different views," Khalid said in a press conference.

Khalid was answering to allegations that he and three other PAS MPs were trying to erode the power of the sultan by asking for the removal of the executive powers of Mais.

The sultan ( right ) is still the head of Islam in the state, he said, But Mais has to be relooked, so that it cannot give orders Selangor Religious Islamic Department (Jais).

'Islamic chauvinist'

Jais raided the office of the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) in January this year and took away 321 copies of Malay-language and Iban-language bibles.

This month, Jais refused to return the bibles even after the attorney-general's office ruled that BSM had not violated any laws.

Meanwhile, Khalid rebuked Perkasa's Ruslan Kassim, calling him an "Islamic chauvinist" for his "chop heads off" remark.

Ruslan had threatened the four MPs for wanting to put a leash on Mais.

"This is the Islamic chauvinist style carried by Umno, Perkasa and Jati," he said, adding that only police reports could have made Ruslan back off from his arrogant attitude.

Perkasa's information chief Ruslan later clarified that he only asked to "kill" the political careers of the MPs and was not really asking for their heads.
