A male driver and his female passenger were nearly killed when several steel rods at a LRT construction site in Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang towards federal highway fell onto a car this morning.

In the incident at 9am today, the rods fell from a crane which was lifting them and hit the victims' car, a Honda Civic.

Petaling Jaya district police chief Azmi Abu Kassim said initial investigations found the steel rods from pillar 88 of the LRT project fell and hit the victims' car.

"After the Honda Civic was hit, a Nissan Vanette rammed the car from behind. The van's driver was not injured.

Both the victims who were injured were sent to Sime Darby Medical Centre for treatment," he said when contacted today.

Meanwhile, chairperson of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lee Lam Thye said the contractor for the LRT project has to be accountable for the incident.

"The time has come for the LRT transport operators to pay more attention to the attitude of their contractors and for the contractors to ensure proper supervision of all their work sites," he said in a statement.

The contractor responsible for the package A of the Kelana Jaya LRT extension project, Trans Resources Corporation (TRC) Sdn Bhd, said they would monitor and enhance their safety procedures at construction sites.

Its executive chairman Sufri Mohd Zin said all the necessary steps and precautions had been taken by the company to prevent such occurrences.

"It is also our concern and priority to fully investigate the cause of the incident," he said in a statement.

"We are working closely and will extend our fullest cooperation to the relevant authorities such as Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (SPNB) and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) in the ongoing investigation on this incident," he added.

The company would monitor and enhance the project's safety procedures at sites and would also abide by whatever advice and decision imposed by the authorities.

Sufri expressed the company's regrets for the unfortunate incident which occurred at their construction site, and deeply regretted any inconvenience caused to any party as a result of the incident.
