Kelantan's syariah chief judge Daud Mohamad will head a 12-man team of experts in a move to push the implementation of hudud in the state.

The team was selected at a state exco meeting and they will be sent to meet Miniser in Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom sometime this month, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah ( right ) told New Straits Times .

"We have decided to choose Daud because he has experience. Before this, he was involved in drafting the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment II and he will be like the head of delegation from Kelantan to the national-level committee," Mohd Amar is quoted as saying.

The move is to hasten the formation of a federal-state technical task force to look into the implementation of hudud in Kelantan, before the tabling of a Private Member's Bill on the matter in Parliament.

Mohd Amar said other experts in the team included lawyer Zulkarnain Lokman, Islamic scholar Mohd Azhar Abdullah and syariah lawyer Nik Baharom Nik Abdullah.

PAS has been trying to implement hudud in Kelantan since 1993 but its proposals have been shot down at the federal level.

In April, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak opened a door, saying the federal government had never rejected hudud as the divine law, but many issues and obstacles needed to be addressed before the Islamic law could be implemented in this country.

This subsequently led to the decision to set up the hudud study task force.
