Deputy Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Bakri has advised the people not to use the social media to threaten harmony, security and sovereignty of the country.

Abdul Rahim ( left ) said the government would always be watching the actions of such individuals and would take appropriate action based on the country's law and constitutional provisions.

"As a multiracial and multireligious country with geographical differences too, there is no denying that it faces various challenges and demands.

"But what is most important is for every citizen to have a sense of responsibility, to respect the constitution and the country's laws, and not to threaten the peace for personal reasons and without considering the bad implications on people and country."

Abdul Rahim said this after the presentation of contributions to 500 needy people at the 1Malaysia Hall, in Kudat on Saturday night, when asked on the action of some quarters using social media to create provocation with the aim of causing disunity and destabilising the country.

Abdul Rahim, who is Kudat MP, also reminded Muslims to be united, to strengthen relationships among them and to practise moderation as Islam enjoined  its followers to be inclusive, well-meaning and exemplary.

He said Malaysians had reason to be proud and grateful to be able to live in a peaceful and prosperous country, the result of various development programmes carried out by the ruling government.

"They are free to move around, to find jobs, to have a better life as well as to enjoy various government aid and facilities. Such comforts are not found in many countries.

"Not only people in poor countries suffer, but even some of the developed countries face high employment rates and uncontrolled rising cost of living accompanied by declining quality of life," he noted.

Abdul Rahim said in Malaysia, the BN government would continue to strive in managing the country as best as possible, and would not allow disruptive elements to destroy the good things the country had.
