Johor DAP has called on the state government to reveal the total amount of money it is reaping from several developers for reclaiming land off the state's shores.

This comes after Johor Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin ( left ) announced that 30sen would be charged for every square feet of land that is reclaimed in the Straits of Johor to help fishermen affected by the works.

"If this 30sen is from a price of RM10 or RM15 per square feet or more, then 30sen is too little and unreasonable," Pengkalan Rinting assemblyperson Cheo Yee How and Johor DAP committee member Mahdzir Ibrahim said in a joint statement yesterday.

Khaled had said a total of 3,237.48 hectares of land is being reclaimed, which means the 30sen fishermen's charge would come to a total of RM104 million.

However, Cheo and Mahdzir pointed out that the money would be channelled into a fund and not given directly to the affected fishermen, who in the southwest part of the state alone number 2,438.

"Even if half of the RM104 million, which is RM52 million, is given as compensation to the fishermen's families, each family will receive between RM21,000 and RM22,000.

"Is RM21,000 worth it, compared with the future of the fishermen and their families, whose livelihood are permanently affected?" the statement by Cheo and Mahdzir asked.

Johor Bahru, particularly its coast facing Singapore, is undergoing massive development under the Iskandar Malaysia project.
