YOURSAY ‘So justice, freedom and equality are not Islamic precepts?’
UiTM lecturer flays Muslims in Negara-Ku
Ferdtan:
Once fear sets in after the onslaught from Umno-sponsored NGOs, opportunistic individuals are coming out to condemn the set-up of the new civil movement called ‘Negara-Ku’ to reclaim Malaysia back from the racial and religious extremists.
First it was Isma, and now Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UiTM) lecturer Khalif Muammar, who has no business to be involved in such politics.
Why the fear of Negara-Ku in the first place? What a brainless lecturer to come out to say, “That the justice and freedom concepts they (Negara-Ku) were fighting for were not in accordance with Islam.”
Really, Khalif, did you say that or you were misquoted? Islam is not about justice and freedom? Are there different kinds of justice and freedom?
David Dass: Justice, freedom and equality are not Islamic precepts? This is startling.
I am not in a position to contradict this. In ‘Freedom, Equality and Justice in Islam’, MH Kamali presents the reader with an analysis of the three concepts of freedom, equality and justice from an Islamic point of view.
My perusal of a synopsis to the book leads me to the conclusion that the Islamic view of these concepts is no different from other civilisations.
Some Muslims may take the view that women and non-Muslims are not entitled to equal treatment. Is that the objection here?
Our federal constitution enshrines freedom and equality and our courts are enjoined to defend, preserve and protect the constitution. The notion of justice is not a western liberal concept. It is present in all civilisations.
To be ‘just’ simply means ‘to be fair’. And a ruler or judge always strives to be just and fair in trying to resolve conflicts and disputes between people.
Tholu: Aren’t the concepts of justice and freedom universal and when viewed through the prism of any religion and belief systems would be of the same hue and colour?
Do basic humanity qualities and principles such as justice, freedom, brotherly love, sympathy, compassion, mercy and generosity differ from one religion to another? How would the feeling of brotherly love, for instance, vary between Christianity and Islam?
Could it be that one religion limits the feeling of brotherly love to the anatomical and physical characteristics of a person as compared to the other religion?
Boy oh boy, am I confused.
Dr Jacob George: This is proof that our institutions of education are today infiltrated by race and religious bigots masquerading as lecturers, professors and what have you, which red flags problems in race relations in the future if not contained.
Ratbatblue: Khalif, why are thousands and thousands of Muslims trying to emigrate to countries in Europe? Do they not believe in your Muslim worldview?
Why are Western governments pandering to every whim and fancy of these immigrants? Why are there mosques springing up at every corner in streets in the United Kingdom, Germany and France?
Why does the UK allow Muslim women to cover their faces even though there has been an uproar over this from the ordinary people? For your information, that's the western worldview.
So the draconian methods employed to curtail crime in the Muslim worldview is superior? Hand chopping, four witnesses to prove that a victim was being violated, forced conversion of minors without the non-Muslim spouse's knowledge, among others, all these are superior to the western worldview?
No, I think I'll rather stick with the Western worldview even though it may not be perfect. At least I can have a say on why I object to laws imposed on me.
Gaji Buta: Soon someone may say that cracking down on terrorist cells and militants who fight in the name of Islam, are acceding to western worldview.
Maybe they will even lodge reports against the police for arresting these militants.
Paul Warren: So pray tell us what is the Islamic idea or notion of a just world? And please don't take anything from the Judeo-Christian world of justice and humanitarian.
Retnam: Actually these people are pitiable. While they talk so much, they are just incapable of doing anything that will make them better than the Jews. So it is a terrible frustration that they have to endure.
They can scold, insult, and condemn the Jews, but the Jews continue to remain the strongest race in the world. What immense frustration that will be, I can only imagine.
AJ: Fighting for justice and equality transcends religion. If there is a religion that stands in the way of this basic right, how can it have a greater God.
How can everyone live in peace if we have people who call themselves educators believe otherwise.
I cannot believe the Islamic worldview can be so slanted. The so-called higher learning institution should do a check on Khalif.
