NGO group MRT Watch has urged the government to have greater oversight over the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project following a series of incidents involving the ongoing works.

In a statement today, the NGO referred to last month's accident where a metal slab crushed a car at the Pusat Bandar Damansara MRT construction site.

It also highlighted the appearance of a small sink hole at Jalan Bukit Bintang in April and a burst pipe at Mutiara Damansara in February reportedly due to the MRT works.

"Various safety issues have raised a question mark about the safety level of the MRT project," it said.

MRT Watch also raised concern about the challenges and dangers that will come with the project's tunneling works, particularly in areas which are unstable and have underwater streams.

"A complicated project like this requires strong leadership, capability, skills and credibility to ensure its implementation is effective," it said.
