Remnants of cronyism, nepotism and corruption continue to stay with the government Chief Minister Adenan Satem inherited from former chief mnister Abdul Taib Mahmud, Sarawak DAP claimed today.

One example of such corruption cited by state DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen is the appointment of Gerald Rentap Jabu, son of Deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu, as a board  member of state-owned Syarikat Sesco Bhd.

“Jabu ( right ) should take cue from the chief minister by making sure that his son Gerald Rentap resigns as a director of Syarikat Sesco,” said Chong, who is the MP for Bandar Kuching and  assemblyperson for Kota Sentosa.

Following  Adenan’s declaration to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) that he would not allow his family members to apply for state land or get government contracts and tenders in order to ensure the state government under him is clean, Chong called on Jabu to follow suit.

Chong asked: “In what capacity is Gerald Rentap sitting on the board of directors of Syarikat Sesco, which is a wholly state-owned company tasked with the supply of electricity throughout Sarawak.

“The state financial secretary, through Sarawak Energy Bhd, owns all the shares in Syarikat Sesco.  As such, its directors are appointed by the state government to safeguard the interests of the government in the company.”

Explain to the people, Adenan, Jabu told

Under normal circumstances, he said, officers from the state, the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the relevant federal ministry are appointed as directors and they will have to ensure that the government’s policies are implemented.

“As far as I know, Gerald Rentap's only linkage to the Sarawak government is through his father, the deputy chief minister. Such linkage should not be considered in the appointment to the directorship of a government-owned company,” Chong added.

He then called on Adenan and Jabu to explain the appointment of Gerald Rentap to the people.

“To foster clean, fair and good governance in the administration of the state government, we, DAP Sarawak, call upon Alfred Jabu to practise the good policy set by Adenan Satem by ensuring that his son resigns from Syarikat Sesco,” Chong said.

He had earlier offered to help Adenan with a 10-point reform policy to ensure that his government is clean, fair and gets rid of cronyism, nepotism and corrupt practices prevalent in the previous leadership.
