Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Paul Low has been taken to task for the conclusive clearing of indiscipline of the three Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers implicated in the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock.

Beng Hock’s sister Teoh Lee Lan chided Low, who oversees governance and integrity, for “desperately covering up for MACC” by only explaining the agency’s transformation stage and claiming its premises as “safe places to go”.

“While the court has yet to deliver judgment, MACC is still suspected, (but) Low has cleared their names. His statement is unreasonable, inhumane and it is like rubbing salt in our wounds,” Lee Lan said.

Lee Lan ( right ) said this after submitting a statement that included five questions to Low at his Putrajaya office today.

However, the minister was said to have been outstation and the questions were handed over to his officers.

Teoh was found dead at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam five years ago, after an overnight interrogation at Selangor MACC’s headquarters located in the building.

On Tuesday, Malaysiakini reported that the MACC special committee had cleared former Selangor investigations unit head Hishamudin Hashim, assistant enforcement officer Arman Alies and assistant superintendent Mohd Ashraf Mohd Yunus of any indiscipline related to Teoh’s death.

'Reveal MACC internal investigation report'

Among the questions submitted today, the Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy urged Low to reveal the report on the internal disciplinary investigation by MACC and to explain why the government was accepting two contradictory conclusions by the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) and MACC.

The RCI said the four interrogations endured by Teoh caused him to move from being in the low-risk group for suicide into the high-risk group in just 13 hours, and as for the trio's interrogation tactics, the report dubbed Arman "the bully", Mohd Ashraf "the abuser" and Hishammuddin "the arrogant leader".

“The Prime Minister's Department must explain why Hishammudin could be promoted to director of Negeri Sembilan MACC after the incident. On what basis?”

Lee Lan said Low ( left ) was given one month to respond to the questions posed today, especially if he agreed with the RCI finding.

“If it was the behaviour of MACC officers that caused Beng Hock's death, then MACC is tantamount to an assassin agency. Does that mean the government allows such interrogation tactics that these three officers were cleared of?” Lee Lan asked.

“Every single day of waiting counts, and this is our family's suffering period. So Low must reply to us as soon as possible.”
