Over 20 customers ran helter-skelter when a Proton Waja vehicle rammed Jelutong food court in George Town early today.

Penang Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the 2.30am incident angered members of the public, who beat up the driver before he was rescued by a friend who arrived at the scene shortly after that.

“The man, in his 30s, sustained minor injuries and is being treated at the Penang Hospital,” he told reporters in George Town.

Asked if the man was driving under the influence of alcohol, he said the matter was still under investigation.
