Environmental group, Save Malaysia Stop Lynas (SMSL) ,is gearing up for renewed protest as the temporary operating licence (TOL) of the Lynas Advanced Material Plant (Lamp) in Gebeng, Kuantan comes up for renewal.

In a statement issued today, it urged the government not to renew the TOL for Lamp, due to expire by Sept 3 this year.

"In order to convey these messages to the authorities concerned, SMSL is organising a rally for the people of Kuantan and greater Kuantan at the Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan Padang 1 on the Aug 17.

"We are also sending a delegation comprising local residents to hand in memorandums  to the Atomic Energy Licensing Board and Lynas monitoring committee on the 14th," it said.

SMSL said AELB should not renew the licence as Lynas had failed to identify a location for a permanent disposal facility (PDF).

It had said a PDF was not required as it will be recycling its waste into usable products.

Furthermore, SMSL warned that Lynas was in a precarious financial position and if the company goes south, Malaysia may be left to handle its waste.
