Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has been slammed for trying to racialise two different incidents when he called on the police to charge a youth who criticised a mosque’s loud volume of prayer sounds on Facebook.

K hairy ( left ) had said that the youth should be charged just like road rage bully Siti Fairrah Ashykin Kamaruddin or Kiki, whose actions of abusing a senior citizen with a steering lock after he had rammed the back of her car, were caught on video which went viral on the internet.

Dr Afif Bahardin, who is leading the race for PKR’s national deputy Youth chief post, said the two incidents were poles apart - one related to violence, another  about religious intolerance.

“Road bullies or those who commit violence must be charged, no matter who does it, which race or religion he or she belongs to,” the Penang cabinet member told Malaysiakini .

“The Facebooker who criticised the sound volume of prayers azan is an example of intolerance, which we can find on both sides, in every community,” he added.

He blamed it on the manner in which Malaysians have socialisingsince young, the way they were brought up separated from each other, due to the government’s divide and rule policies.

Afif ( left ) questioned why Khairy failed to speak up strongly against the likes of Malays rights NGOs Perkasa and Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) who have been issuing racist and religious rants against other communities, if he is not being racist.

He also does not speak up when there are individuals or his comrades in Umno who express very extreme views offensive to other communities, the state PKR youth chief charged.

Afif said Khairy is not leading Malaysia the way it should be if he views these two incidents through racist eyes.

Khairy gets what to do lecture

The young Minister should instead promote more tolerance, racial harmony and openness for all quarters to dialogue and discuss issues, he added.

The openness, he added, includes, freedom of speech and expression and freedom of the media, which has been severely curtailed in the country by restrictive laws such as the Sedition Act.

“In Malaysia, in order to promote a tolerant and open society, we must not tolerate the intolerance,” he quipped.

Khairy, in a recent Facebook posting, said that the youth, Kelvin Yip, deserves to be charged, to be taught a lesson once and for all, and that (the police should)  "act strict and fast towards anyone guilty without considering their race”.

In his Facebook posting, Yip had allegedly posted strong words filled with expletives saying, “Eh hello bastards...I know its Hari Raya and all but please ... keep your prayers to the almighty off some loudspeaker at 6.45 in the morning...it's annoying…”.

Yip had quickly deleted the post and apologised after being cautioned by several Facebook users, and has since deactivated his Facebook account.

On July 22, the Kuantan session court fined Siti Fairrah RM 5,000 and ordered to do 240 hours of community service after pleading guilty to the charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code.

She was convicted of  knocking the front, the hood and the windshield of the car owned by Sim Hiak Hong, 68, with a steering wheel lock, causing damages amounting to  RM500 in damages.
