MIC is to amend its constitution to allow for the election of the party's state chairmen, said party president G Palanivel.

Currently, the MIC state chairmen are appointed by the party president.

"We will hold discussions this month to amend the party constitution. All states will elect the chairmen.

"There will be elections at the branch and divisional levels," he told reporters after opening the Sabah MIC Convention in Kota Kinabalu last night.

Also present was Sabah MIC chairman Datuk V Jothi.

Palanivel advised Sabah MIC to raise the number of Indian voters in the state to at least 5,000.

Currently, the state has only 935 Indian voters, he said.

He also said that Sabah had about 13,000 Indians, of which about 2,000 were members of the 32 branches of the party in the state.
