Mariah Carey may have legions of fans worldwide, but the Grammy-award winner is most certainly not Muslim student group Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia's (Gamis) cup of tea.

 

Gamis views the pop diva with such disdain that it wants her concert at Stadium Merdeka scheduled for Oct 22 cancelled.

 

“As a Muslim student movement, Gamis views seriously the government’s lackadaisical attitude on the holding of wild concerts year after year, despite they being detrimental to the culture and intellect of the youths.

 

“Promotion of sexy foreign artists who do not observe the aurat (Muslim dress code) will influence youth culture and poses a danger to future leadership (of the country),” Gamis president Abdul Malik Abdul Razak said in a statement.

 

Abdul Malik said the “daring” move of bringing in “the sexy artist” is “disrespectful” as the nation is still grieving over the downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, while Palestinians in Gaza are facing Israeli attack.

 

“While our Muslim brothers in Gaza are being murdered... we so willingly allow the faith and ethics of our youth to be ripped asunder by dishing out sexy models and entertainment,” he said.

 

Abdul Malik said the government should reflect on the recent “tests” by Allah that have befallen Malaysia and to revive Islamic values in Malaysia.

 

He said it would be better to spend the RM3.2 million, the reported cost of the concert, on spiritual and intellectual events instead. 

 

“Gamis urges all parties, be it the government, political parties, NGOs and students, to heed the tragedies that have befallen us and to work together to curb such wild entertainment,” he said.

 

Carey, who is being brought in by a private concert promoter, will be performing in Kuala Lumpur before heading to Singapore and the Philippines as part of her world tour.

 

This is not the first time the pop diva will be performing in Malaysia - she was here in 2004 and the event drew similar protests from Islamic party PAS.

 

Following that, Carey ditched her sexy costumes and dressed conservatively in the concert.
