Wanita Gerakan has questioned DAP’s integrity over its treatment of Karpal Singh's former driver, C Selvam, who has been charged with reckless driving.

Selvam was at the wheel in the April 17 accident on the North-South Expressway, near Gua Tempurung in Perak, which resulted in the death of the DAP stalwart and his assistant Michael Cornelius.

Wanita Gerakan chief Tan Lian Hoe said in a statement today that Gerakan’s legal team had to come forward to assist Selvam in his legal defence.

 

Tan said despite DAP having a large pool of lawyers, none has been assigned to defend Selvam, which she found very puzzling.

 

She added it was very disappointing that DAP refused to pay Selvam’s bail of RM5,000 when DAP had raised RM 100,000 for Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua when he lost a lawsuit in 2012.

Now, the party has ignored Selvam simply because he has no more value to it.

 

“This poses a big question as to DAP’s integrity. Will it treat the voters like Selvam and betray its promises to the people?” she asked.

Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan ( right ), on Monday posted the RM5,000 bail for Selvam.

 

However Karpal's sons, Ram Karpal and Gobind Singh Deo, had said they cannot appear for Selvam, as Ram could be a witness in the trial.

Meanwhile, Star Online reports that the case management for Selvam's case was today fixed for Sept 9.

 

Lawyer Baljit Singh represented Selvam while Haijan Omar appeared for families of the deceased while DPP Fadhli Abd Wahab prosecuted.

 

Selvam last month claimed trial to driving the vehicle bearing the registration number KS 9898 in a reckless manner at KM306.1 of the northbound lane of the North-South Expressway about 12.40am on April 17.

 

If found guilty, Selvam, an Indian national, stands to face a two years' jail and a maximum fine of RM20,000.
