As the death toll in Gaza mounts, ordinary Malaysians are trying to do their small part to show solidarity and McDonalds has become the target of a boycott call.

This stems from McDonald's reputation as an American brand, the country which has been a staunch backer of Israel in the ongoing conflict.

KiniTV hits the streets to see if the call for boycott has gained any traction and what Malaysians really think about it.

For those who were opposed to the boycott, many speak of the adverse effects on local wage earners.

"If we boycott, it affects the local workers, many of them are Malays, their income will be affected," said a cobbler, who only wanted to be known as Ibrahim.

Instead, Ibrahim said people should boycott Israeli products directly.

Echoing this was Solo, who pointed out that the boycott has seen local workers being abused.

"Even now, there are workers who have been insulted, I think that is not good," he said.

Meanwhile, a man who only wanted to be known as Reven, thought that targeting McDonald's was an overreaction.

"Trying to boycott this because of US is a bit out of the question, I don’t see Americans working here," he said.

However, Mohd Yusof begged to differ, stating that the boycott was only temporary.

"I(t is) to bring awareness... but it should not be over done” he said.

Likewise, Mohd Zaim said the boycott was merely a sign of protest.

"It is not to make them (McDonald's) close down, so the workers at McDonald's aren't affected," he said.

As for Faten, she said the boycott was a matter of personal choice.

“(It is) according to your heart because we are boycotting the brand not the people.

"It is up to them to eat or not, I don’t judge if I see someone eating McDonald’s because they have their own reasons,” she said.

To date, 1,939 Palestinians and 67 Israeli's have perished due to the conflict since July 8.
