Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is suffering from an illness which makes him forget his promises, according to Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM).

 

The movement recalled how the prime minister had in the past said that the government was planning to abolish the draconian Sedition Act as part of its transformation plan.

SAMM was commenting on Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement yesterday that the Sedition Act should be amended to tackle social media users.

Disagreeing with this, SAMM coordinator Ahmad Anwar Asyraf said the law should be abolished and not amended .

“SAMM wants to remind the deputy prime minister that on July 2012, the prime minister stated the government wants to abolish this draconian law under the transformation plan.

“The deputy should remind the prime minister of his promises as he tends to be affected with a disease that makes him forget promises” he added in a statement.

 

SAMM also queried the government’s progress in drafting the National Harmony Act.

“The government should hasten the process of completing the harmony bills and other laws so that it can be debated and improved in Parliament,” said Ahmad Anwar.

The SAMM coordinator also called on the government to act on its promise to maintain  harmony and peace in the country.

“We have to face modernisation by doing away with old draconian laws and replacing them with a set of laws that is balanced and promotes unity not one that succumbs to corruption,” he said.

On July 11, 2012, Najib Abdul Razak announced the repeal of the Sedition Act 1948 during the Attorney-General Chamber’s dinner. The act was to be replaced with a National Harmony Bill.
