The Sessions Court in Kemaman today set Sept 2 for the trial of an unemployed man charged with making insulting comments on the Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, on Facebook in May last year.

Judge Rofiah Mohamad fixed the date after Mohd Zamrudhisyam Mohamad, 32, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to the charge.

Mohd Zamrudhisyam was accused of having posted a status as well as comments insulting the Sultan on a Facebook page registered under the name ‘Cucu Nabi’ at the Kemaman District Information Office, Jalan Taha 1, Cukai in Kemaman at 2.30pm on May 20 last year.  

He was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and liable to be punished under Section 233(3) of the same Act, which carries a maximum jail term of one year and fine of RM50,000 and RM1,000 for every day or part of a day during which the offence is continued after conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Ahmad Zakhi Mohd Daud appeared for the prosecution.
