The police are still undecided on what to do with Penang lawyer Cheah Kah Peng. His one-month bail ended yesterday, but he was told that the police are still investigating his case.

According to Cheah, the police have yet to receive instructions from the Attorney-General's Chamber on whether to charge him.

"They (the police) will inform me if they are going to proceed with the charges against me later," he told malaysiakini .

Cheah was to be charged under Section 186 of Penal Code for allegedly obstructing police officers while representing his client, KeADILan vice president Tian Chua in Petaling Jaya last month. ("[#3]Lawyers protest police's ill treatment of Tian Chua's lawyer[/#]", April 18)

He said that he had tried since last week to contact the officer-in-charge of his case to enquire about his status. "I was transferred from one Sargeant Sharif to one Sargeant Othman, and then to somebody else," he said.

"At last, I got to a senior police officer who promised to give me an answer," he said.

Later, he got a call from one ASP Lee who told him that the police are still probing his case.

Cheah, who resides in Penang, said he was about to fly to Kuala Lumpur yesterday until he was informed that he need not report to the Petaling Jaya police station.

Last month, Cheah was released on police bail after being detained for three hours in the Petaling Jaya police station.

Cheah said that he was not charged upon release but he had to report to the police station yesterday when his one-month bail expired. Efforts by malaysiakini to contact the officer-in-charge of Cheah's case were unsuccessful.
