There has been an increase in rat urine cases or Leptospirosis in Pahang from 2011 to 2013, the Pahang state assembly was told today.

State Health, Human Resources and Special Duties Committee chairperson Norol Azali Sulaiman said the number of rat urine cases recorded in the state last year was 277 compared with 163 cases in 2012 and 135 cases recorded the previous year.

Among the districts which recorded the highest number of cases were Kuantan, Jerantut, Lipis, Pekan, Maran and Temerloh.

The number of deaths caused by the disease also increased last year, five, compared with zero the previous year and one recorded in 2011.

“Various measures like health education activities and leptospirosis management courses have been conducted by the State Health Department, district health offices, health clinics and hospitals throughout Pahang to prevent leptospirosis from spreading,” he said in reply to Lee Chin Chen (DAP-Ketari) during the 13th Pahang state legislative assembly at Wisma Sri Pahang in Kuantan today.

The state government has also issued guidelines to managements of recreation centres with streams and waterfalls, to prevent water-borne diseases.
