Penang PKR Youth today lodged a police report against those trying to keep opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim from seeking a fair trial for his Sodomy II case.

Anwar is appealing the five-year jail sentence imposed on him by the Court of Appeal, which overturned the Jan 9, 2012 High Court decision acquitting and discharging Anwar of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari, 26, on June 26, 2008.

The appeal is to be heard by the Federal Court on Oct 28 and 29.

The party's Bukit Mertajam Youth chief Mohd Ikhwan Naasser Mohamad Isa said the attorney-general's charges against Anwar's lawyer, N Surendran ( right ) under the Sedition Act are "malicious".

"It is obvious that the attack on Surendran serves to pressure and intimidate those who are defending. Anwar," Ikhwan told reporters outside the Seberang Perai Tengah district police headquarters in Perda, Bukit Mertajam today.

"This action directly prevents Anwar from seeking a fair and proper trial and defence in the Federal Court," he added.

He was referring to the charge against the Padang Serai MP at a sessions court in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 19 for releasing a press statement on Anwar's Sodomy II charge.

Surendran is accused of saying Aug 14 that the "Court of Appeal written judgment in Fitnah II is flawed, defensive and insupportable", and that the charge against Anwar for Sodomy II is false.

'An insult to the Federal Court'

Surendran was also slapped with another charge under the Sedition Act for his remarks recorded on video on Aug 8 that Anwar's case was "political conspiracy" involving Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Ikhwan said charging Anwar's counsel is also an insult to the Federal Court, adding that this was a "serious interference" in court proceedings as well as  Malaysia’s justice system.

"We demand that the action to prevent Anwar from getting a fair trial be stopped immediately, and let there be no more intimidation against his lawyers," Ikhwan said.

"Such serious actions that involve the integrity of the country's justice system, should be investigated and appropriate action taken against the culprits, regardless of their position or power," he added.

Ikhwan was accompanied by the party's state Youth treasurer Azhar Mohd, Bagan Youth chief Nakshahbandi Sahar and Tasek Gelugor Youth chief Mohd Radzi Idrus.
