Police had last night asked about 20 members of PAS’ Unit Amal (voluntary unit corps) who were doing crime prevention rounds at the Pandan Indah LRT station to disperse.

In a report carried by Berita Harian today, Chempaka assemblyperson Iskandar Abdul Samad,  who is also Selangor exco member for Housing, Building Management and Squatters, had gathered at the station at about 8pm to patrol the area following public complaints of rampant crime.

However, Ampang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Khairuldin Saad had asked the Unit Amal to disperse as only police are allowed to do crime rounds.

Khairuldin further said the police do not want anyone to take the law into their hands to curb crime as every report lodged would be investigated.

“The police would not hesitate in taking action against the Unit Amal if they continue to do the crime rounds without discussing with the police,” the Ampang police chief said as quoted in the daily.

Meanwhile, Iskandar in a statement today welcomed the police promise to increase their rounds at the station and other nearby stations.

He said they would also meet the police to discuss security concerns.

Iskandar ( left ) added they are glad there were no untoward incidents in their encounter with the police.

“We have directed the Unit Amal to do their crime rounds as there has been a rise in snatch theft cases on LRT users. We accept the advice by Khairuldin to stop the crime prevention rounds.

“We thank Khairuldin and the 20 policemen who were on the ground to look at the problem at the Pandan Indah station. Despite the dispersal order, the Unit Amal and PAS volunteers and the local people will continue to observe the Pandan Indah LRT station at night to ensure the police are making their rounds,” he said.

Iskandar hoped with the close cooperation from the Unit Amal, the locals and police, crime in the area could be curbed.
