The police will screen all members of the Penang Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS) and take legal action against those found to be involved in crime.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said action could be taken against them under the existing laws and the Societies Act 1966.

He said the names of those who were free from crime would be submitted to the state government for further action.

“All associations or non-government organisations connected with security must know security is under the jurisdiction of the federal government (security forces).

“There is no need for the setting-up of other security bodies which were created as if to challenge the federal government,” he told a media conference after opening the 2014 Kubang Pasu Umno Division delegates meeting in Jitra, today.

Ahmad Zahid said those interested in volunteer security forces could join the People's Volunteer Corp (Rela), Rakan Cop, Territorial Army and Community Police.

On the claim of Penang executive councillor Phee Boon Poh that he was treated like a criminal, Ahmad Zahid said he was well treated and underwent the interrogation procedure, as normal.

“He could also make a telephone call,” he said.

On Aug 31, about 250 PPS members were detained by police at 10.15am during the state-level Independence Day celebration at Padang Kota Lama, George Town, Penang.
