Former Bukit Gelugor by-election candidate Abu Backer Sidek Mohd Zain has been charged with provocation.
 
Abu Backer, who contested with the horse logo as an independent candidate in the by-election held in May, was charged under Section 504 of the Penal code.
 
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, reports The Star today.
 
The 46-year-old had on May 12 “intentionally provoked” D Alappah by making racial slurs, according to the charge sheet.
 
The charge under Section 504 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of two years, or a fine, or both if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Razali Che Ani asked the court to fix bail at RM5,000.

However, Abu Backer’s counsel Rosli Ismail told the court that his client had attended court without any police bail.

He argued that Abu Backer did so even though he is a lawyer based in Singapore.

Sessions Court judge Zuhazmi Abdullah fixed bail at RM2,000 and set Oct 16 for mention.

Abu Backer made headlines when he threw himself in front of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s car in a move to meet the latter.

Laying sprawled in front of the car, he then claimed he was hit by the vehicle and complained of pain in his right rib.

Abu Backer ran against Independent candidate Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Sathar, Parti Cinta Malaysia’s Huan Cheng Guan and DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh before pulling out at the 11th hour.
