Arief Yuwono said these provinces need to prepare preventive measures in the event of a forest fire, Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported.
The provinces are North and South Sumatra, Jambi and Riau as well as the five provinces of Kalimantan.
Major forest fires were reported in Riau Province last year and similar incidents are expected to occur in South Sumatra and Central Kalimantan in 2014.
Forest fires raged across 20,000 hectares of forest and land in Riau Province last year, with losses incurred by the state reaching 10 trillion Indonesian rupiah (US$847.36 million).
