Selangor menteri besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim still has executive powers, including to sign agreements on the state's behalf, the Selangor legal adviser said.

Responding to Klang MP Charles Santiago (left) , Nik Suhaimi Nik Sulaiman said this is as the Selangor sultan still recognises Khalid as the sitting MB, in accordance with the Selangor constitution.

"So Khalid is still has full powers to fulfill his duties, functions and obligations as menteri besar," he said in a statement late today.

He said that this includes signing the water industry restructuring agreement with the federal government, on behalf of the state.

He added that the sultan had also postponed the acceptance of the MB’s resignation, pending the appointment of a new MB, and this should be respected.

'Don’t cause unease'

"While we recognise the democratic principle of freedom of speech, we must also observe decorum and respect the rights of the Selangor sultan under the state constitution," he said.

He said that contradicting this could cause confusion and unease among the rakyat.

Charles earlier said that Khalid’s signature on the water agreement may not carry much weight as he is an interim MB who no longer commands the support of the majority of the House.

Khalid last month tendered his resignation to the palace, after 30 of the 56 Selangor assemblypersons declared support for PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as MB.

Khalid was earlier sacked by PKR for not wanting to make way for Wan Azizah.

PKR earned a royal reprimand after nominating only Wan Azizah as MB, despite the sultan’s decree for "more than two" candidates.
