Penang police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi today said that he and the his team have been discharging their duties according to the law and not at their whims and fancy to achieve personal agenda.

    

He also stressed that that the police had never taken action following pressure from any quarters, but would only act according to existing procedures.

As such, he said they would not be affected by the insults and attacks from dissatisfied non-governmental organisations and individuals.

"The responsibilities of the police are to maintain peace, public order and security of the country...and not to listen to allegations and lies spread by the public."

    

Abdul Rahim said this in response to the Mind and Social Care Malaysia president Ramesh Rao's tweet which read: "Ketua polis Pulau Pinang takut dengan Lim Guang Eng? Sampai bila nak jadi barua DAP?'. (Penang chief police officer scared of Lim Guan Eng? How much longer should he be a DAP stooge?).

Ramesh posted the tweet yesterday after the police did nothing to arrest Lim, who is Penang chief minister, concerning the Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS) issue.

On Aug 31, police arrested 156 members of PPS, including its chairperson, Phee Boon Poh, who is also state welfare, caring society and environment committee chairperson, for ignoring police warnings not to carry out any activities after the PPS was found to have not registered with the Registrar of Societies.

Police also arrested Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer on the following day and PPS deputy chairperson, Ng Wei Aik, who is also Tanjong MP, on Sept 4. - Bernama
