P KUBOR Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said today Muslims in Malaysia are fortunate as they are able to live in peace despite varying political affiliations, unlike those in some other countries.

He said Muslims in several other countries had to put up with chaos, strife, economic problems and widespread poverty.

In Malaysia, unlike in some other countries, there were no restrictions on Muslims of different political affiliations from carrying out their religious obligations, he said when addressing a luncheon gathering in the compound of a mosque in Pengkalan Kubor.

Earlier, Muhyiddin attended Friday prayers at the mosque along with more than 1,000 worshippers.

Muhyiddin, who is BN deputy chairperson, is on his second visit to Kelantan to boost the coalition's campaign in Pengkalan Kubor. Polling for the by-election is on Sept 25.

Muhyiddin said the advantage Malaysia had was that it had a responsible government and leaders to plan and implement effective development.

The government had been relentless in taking care of the people and bringing progress since the country gained independence 57 years ago, he said.

He said the people in the Pengkalan Kubor constituency should give priority to unity.

Muhyiddin announced a contribution of RM300,000 to the mosque to upgrade its facilities.

Kelantan BN chairperson Mustapa Mohamed and the BN candidate for the by-election, Mat Razi Mat Ail, were also present at the event.

The by-election is a three-cornered contest among Mat Razi, Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim of PAS and Independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary. It is being held following the death of the three-term assemblyperson Noor Zahidi Omar of the BN, on Aug 20.
