Gerakan will amend its constitution to limit the party presidency to a maximum of three terms at its annual national delegates conference (NDC) next month. 
 
Party president Mah Siew Keong (left) said besides the presidency, the tenure of state chairpersons would also be affected by the proposed amendment.
 
He noted that the initial proposal was to limit the posts to only a two-term period but feedback from the grassroots favoured three terms.
 
"We have had discussions on this matter and 70 percent of the delegates felt that two terms would be too short," Mah said when opening the Selangor Gerakan delegates meeting in Petaling Jaya today.
 
The proposal to limit the president's term in office was mooted by Mah during his presidency bid last year with a view to enabling the party to stay fresh and keep abreast with political changes in the country.
 
Gerakan's NDC this year is scheduled for Oct 18 and 19. 
 
On another matter, Mah urged Gerakan members to reinforce their unity and cooperative spirit to strengthen the party.
 
Despite possible differences among party members, he stressed the need for them to fully support the elected office bearers towards an effective implementation of party work.
 
Commenting on a separate matter later, Mah, who is minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said the controversial Sedition Act was needed for now until further decisions on this were made.
