Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has condemned the excessive use of police violence in Hong Kong and urged its government to stop its crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

“PSM urges the government of Hong Kong to stop its ruthless crackdown on the democratic movement.

“PSM also demands the government of the People’s Republic of China respect the right of the people of Hong Kong to decide their future democratically,” said PSM’s international coordinator Choo Chon Kai ( right ), in expressing solidarity for the protests.

The Communist Party of China had previously promised to let residents in the Hong Kong Special Administration Region to elect its chief executive starting 2017.

However, China’s National People's Congress Standing Committee ruled out further reforms last month, which would mean all candidates for the post needs to be vetted by a committee, which is seen as largely pro-Beijing.

This led to a series of mass protests starting last week, while police responded on Sunday with tear gas, pepper spray, and baton charges, which according to CNN, had left at least 56 people injured.
