BN's victory in the Pengkalan Kubor by-election does not mean the federal ruling coalition will be able to break the long-standing dominance of PAS in Kelantan, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said today.

The BN has to work harder, Khairy said, to prove that it can provide development and take care of the welfare of all Kelantan people, and that it all comes down to whether the BN machinery in the state functions effectively.

"We have to prove to Kelantan that we can provide a vision and a development that is better than what they have now," he said.

"But it does not mean that winning the by-election means we automatically win Kelantan," he added during a press conference at Putrajaya today.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang ( left ) had warned that the by-election, which saw PAS lose to the BN by an even bigger majority compared to PKR's defeat for the same state seat in last year’s general election, could signal the fall of the PAS state government in Kelantan.

'Kelantan will fall if voter shift continues'

Lim said if the voter shift continued at a rate of 4.5 percent in favour of BN in all areas in the state, as it happened in Pengkalan Kubor, the state government might change in the next election.

PAS has been running Kelantan for 24 years now, since 1990.

BN's new assemblyperson for the seat, Mat Razi Mat Ali ( seated on the right ), defeated PAS' Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim and independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary with a 2,635-vote majority.

Mat Razi's majority is much more higher than the 1,736-vote majority with which his predecessor, the late Noor Zahidi Omar, won in the 13th general election last year.

Mat Razi achieved the majority even though the by-election had a lower turnout compared with the GE13 voter turnout, dropping by at least eight percent.
