With Malaysia’s unimpressive performances in two recent prestigious sporting events, NGO Solidarity Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) expressed disappointment in Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin's lack of "progressive ideas” and called for his resignation.

SAMM's sports coordinator Zuraidi Abdullah, in a statement today, said Khairy needed to come up with a winning formula if he doesn't want to end up a failure.

“If Khairy fails to improve the development of sports in the nation, he need not “whisper” in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's ear to change ministries. He should just resign,” Zuraidi said.

He pointed out that Khairy should have had a comprehensive sports development plan as soon as he stepped into the office.

“The Oxford University-educated minister is merely a bedtime story hero, nothing more,” Zuraidi added.

He cited Malaysia's poor performance at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, in July and at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, which ended on Oct 4.

“On top of that, one of our athletes was caught up in a doping controversy at the Incheon Games, which resulted in her being expelled from the games and stripped of her gold medal.

“Does he realise how badly the quality of our sports is deteriorating?” asked Zuraidi.

He also took a jab at the sports minister's Zumba performance during the launch of FIT Malaysia, a lifestyle campaign organised by his ministry to get people to exercise.

“Don't just spend big on sports if the results are deplorable,” Zuraidi urged.
