Selangor DAP has called on all quarters not to fan intolerance and negative sentiments among the races over the Oktoberfest event.

Its chief Tony Pua said such actions do not contribute to shaping a moderate nation with mutual respect among the races.

Furthermore, he said Oktoberfest does not involve Muslim participants nor is it against the law.

Therefore, the Petaling Jaya Utara MP pointed out that there is no reason to ban the event.

“We call on political parties which are overzealous in targetting the event to calm down, not be emotional and take a rational stand,” Pua ( right ) said in a statement today.

Among others, several PAS leaders have voiced their opposition to the nationwide event, which is sponsored by Carlsberg.

Pua added that non-Muslims in Malaysia often celebrated events such as birthdays and weddings with alcoholic beverages.

“This is a common practice and is not something shocking. Furthermore, it is their right to do so under the law,” he added.

The DAP MP also said Oktoberfest should not be condemned as it is a small event used by breweries to promote their products.

“This event has been taking place for the past five years with no negative implications on society,” he added.
