Non-governmental organisation Negara-Ku patron Ambiga Sreenevasan has been called for an interview session with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) over a report that has been lodged.

Speaking to Malaysiakini , she said the meeting has been scheduled for tomorrow morning.

“The steering committee members have already been interviewed, and I suppose they are now moving on to the patrons of the movement.

“Apparently, this is based on a report filed with the ROS, but there are no other details,” she added.

The former Bar Council president launched Negara-Ku together with national laureate A Samad Said in July.

Both Ambiga and Samad previously spearheaded electoral watchdog Bersih which held two mammoth street protests under their stewardship.

Since its launch, Negara-Ku has come under attack from various quarters, including Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma), which accused the movement of being opposed to Islam and the special position of Malays.

Isma claimed that Negara-Ku would be a new front for humanist, liberal and religious pluralist movements in the country.

However, Ambiga defended the movement on the grounds that it was established based on the federal constitution, Malaysia agreement and Rukunegara.

Previously, it was reported that Negara-Ku leaders were being called up under Section 66(1) of the Societies Act of 1966 which states:

“The Registrar or an Assistant Registrar may summon before him any person who he has reason to believe to be able to give any information as to the existence or operations of any unlawful society, or suspected unlawful society, or as to the operations of any registered society.”

Among those who have already been questioned are the movement’s chairperson Zaid Kamaruddin.
