'Charge Perkasa chief under Sedition Act'

 

“The failure to charge Ibrahim under the Sedition Act will give the government a bad image.

 

“It will also give a negative perception of the Act, for it is viewed as pro-government and biased towards defending the rights of Malays and politicians,” Nur Jazlan is quoted as saying by The Star Online.

 

Nur Jazlan ( left ), a BN MP and chairperson of the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), said the Attorney-General's Chambers should reopen the investigation against Ibrahim under the Sedition Act, instead of the Penal Code.

 

The news report stated that Nur Jazlan believed that such an action against Ibrahim would show the government’s unbiased practice of the Sedition Act towards any individual responsible in affecting inter-racial harmony and unity in the country.

 

“Most of the cases under the Sedition Act have applied to statements pertaining to the Malay people, Islam, and the position of the Malay rulers,” Nur Jazlan is reported as saying.

 

Last January, Ibrahim at a press conference in Penang called on Muslims to "seize" and "burn" the Bible.

 

"Muslims must unite to protect their religion. They must seize those Bibles, including the Malay editions, which contained the term Allah and other Arabic religious terms, and burn them.

 

"This is the way to show our anger against disrespect to our sensitivity," Ibrahim was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today .

 

He was later hauled up by the police after reports were made against him and investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code.

 

Section 298 is the offence of uttering words with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person, and prescribes a year's jail term or a fine or both.
