A Thai company has announced plans to build the region’s tallest building, tentatively named Super Tower, with a completion date set at 2020, reports said today.

Grand Canal Land Plc said the sky scraper will top out at 615 metres, with 125 storeys, including 260 six-star hotel rooms, 90,000 square metres of office space and an observation deck on the top floor.

“It will rank as one of the top 10 tallest buildings in the world,” the Bangkok Post quoted Grand Canal Land chairperson Yotin Boondicharern as saying.

Yotin said construction will begin next year, with the Super Tower as a key component of the new Rama IX-Ratchadaphisek business district.

He said Super Tower, which was only a temporary name, would dwarf Bangkok’s current highest building, the 304-metre Baiyoke Tower II, as well Asean’s current tallest, the 452-metre Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, and another skyscraper to be built in Indonesia.
