Limb amputations for offenders under hudud in Kelantan will not be carried out by medical doctors.

 

Instead, under the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (II) Enactment, they will be carried out by trained professionals appointed by the sultan of Kelantan.

 

As such, the sentence will not be carried out at hospitals, rather, at a fully-equipped venue to be set up by the state government, reported the New Straits Times today.

 

These were among recommendations made by muftis, academicians and professionals who participated in a two-day discussion on ways to carry out hudud punishments.

 

Deputy chairman of the state technical committee on the Syariah Criminal Code II Enactment Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said medical specialists, who participated in the discussion, had suggested that doctors should not be involved in the task as they were bound by their professional body’s code of ethics and regulations.

 

“It was recommended that the job be carried out by trained professionals appointed by the sultan. Their duty will be to carry out the amputations and nothing else.

 

“It was also suggested that the sentence be carried out at a place other than hospitals as hospitals are a place for healing, not to carry out sentences.”

 

Fadzli said the committee was compiling the recommendations before presenting it to the state executive council.

 

“The proposals will serve as a guideline for the state government when implementing the hudud laws,” he said.
