Social activist Ali Abd Jalil, who fled to Sweden seeking asylum, has nothing to fear if he has done nothing wrong, said Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail .

"If you are fighting for what you believe in, you should be responsible for what you say. No need to run here or there," he said after the launching of Institut Latihan Kehakiman dan Perundangan (ILKAP) speaker series in Bangi.

“For all activists, you must answer for what you have done. If you know what you have done, answer for it," Abdul Gani is quoted as saying by The Star today.

Abdul Gani also held that the Malaysian courts were fair and the authorities have means of getting the suspects returned to Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar questioned a report by The Malaysian Insider describing Ali (right) and sex-blogger Alvin Tan, as "political enemies" to the BN.

He said Tan's move to invite Muslims to have a pork dish caused uproar among Muslims at large and Ali's comments is on the monarchy and not on Umno.

"Ali further wrote that he is "prepared to die" for his writings, but when charged in court he immediately ran away," quipped the Umno Youth chief in a Facebook posting.

Khairy also took issue in the portal's alleged portrayal of Ali and Tan as heroes, without acknowleging that what they had posted online were truly "sensitive".

"Do we want to make them an icon? Are they good examples for youth in the country?

"I think the majority of them would not want to see both of them return back to this country," he said.

 

Ali was arrested four times, slapped with three sedition charges and detained for 22 days in prison for criticising the monarchy on Facebook.

 

The 29-year-old student who, was released on bail on Sept 29, eventually fled the country after claiming to receive countless death threats .

 

"The police, gangsters, Perkasa, Malay right-wing groups, Umno groups are all looking for me, some of them have threatened to kill me and beat me up," he had said.

 

According to Ali, Sweden's monarch is more open to criticism , with everyone there being treated equally.
